Educating the Judiciary about the Social Determinants of Health
Continuing Judicial Education Course on Racial Health Inequities and their Relationship to Law

Social factors impacting health, collectively referred to as the social determinants of health (SDOH), include the impact of racism on health and how racism contributes to inequitable health outcomes for Black, Indigenous, People of Color. This half-day course will introduce participants to the social drivers of health, and the ways that social factors influence health inequities, how racism impacts health, and introduce the concept of systems mapping in various legal contexts. Welcoming local speakers from the Bay Area, this course will connect this information to the law and judges’ work and the work that public health practitioners are seeing in the community. The course will utilize cases and exercises at the intersection of law, racism, and health to elicit meaningful discussion.
Learning objectives include:

Become familiar with the SDOH and Racism as a SDOH

Reflect on a range of health inequities in the US

Understand the different mechanisms through which racism affects individual and population health and fosters health inequity

Understand how racism interacts with other social determinants of health and other forms of structural discrimination to create health inequity.

Understand the strengths and weaknesses of applying race-based health data.

Recognize how the judicial system magnifies health inequity

Learn practical tools that judges may use to mitigate adverse impacts on health inequity.
